Our Holistic Approach Sugar Land, TX
Our Holistic Approach
Your oral health has a direct effect on your overall health, and vice versa. A poor diet can be the first step toward gingivitis. Gum disease can lead to bone loss and tooth loss. If allowed to progress, inflammation from gum disease can spread throughout the body and even cause systemic conditions like heart disease and stroke. With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting over 50% of the U.S. population having some form of gum disease in their lifetime, we don’t ignore this life-altering connection. When we provide care, we take a minimally invasive and holistic approach in Sugar Land, TX.
Traditionally, a condition or symptom is paired with a treatment or drug. That’s ideal for acute concerns or emergency care but for chronic diseases and life-long solutions, we consider more. Using a holistic and biological perspective, we look at the root source of your issues instead of the results they cause. Your genetics, environment, diet, current and past health, and your lifestyle all play a part in shaping your overall health. As a board-certified periodontist with a deep understanding of the oral-systemic connection, Dr. Hiru Mathur leads our practice in taking a truly whole-body approach to your care.
“I feel as a caregiver, it’s my responsibility to learn whatever is out there that can help my patients heal better and feel better. My passion is removing inflammation and disease so I can give patients’ their health back.” – Dr. Hiru Mathur
Gum Disease, Gut Health, and Your Diet

The buildup of plaque on your teeth can lead to gum irritation and periodontal pockets that harbor bad bacteria. This is what causes gum disease. Although we offer a long list of treatments to treat periodontal disease including minimally invasive laser gum therapy, the real problem here is the kind of plaque, or bacteria, that is accumulating on your teeth and in your gut. An imbalance of good and bad bacteria in your gut is the source.
An unhealthy diet causes damage and destructive changes to the gut lining and the levels of good bacteria. This leads to the formation of a leaky gut where undigested particles of food and toxic substances get into the bloodstream. The immune system then activates and tries to get rid of these foreign elements resulting in inflammation. Recent studies have shown that gut leakage is the reason for several chronic diseases including periodontal disease, obesity, diabetes, diseases of the brain, and nervous system conditions like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS). This is why we consider more than inflamed gums during a consultation, we also consider your gut microbiome.

Nutritional Counseling and Your Health
Removing plaque buildup and restoring healthy gum tissues after gum disease is our first step. Repairing your gut health, the likely source of your condition, is the next. Restoring a healthy balance of good bacteria may involve adjusting your diet and removing inflammatory foods. Thankfully, Dr. Mathur completed a specialized program in Biological Nutritional Dentistry offered by Dr. Al Danenberg, Periodontist, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, and Certified Primal Health Coach.
We offer a dental nutritional counseling program to help our patients improve their health, not just for their oral health, but the health of the rest of the body. Some patients benefit from a blood panel that tests for food sensitivities or reactions. Others also find dramatic results with supplements by Microbiome Labs that help enhance healing and reduce gut leakage. Your solution, whether a diet plan, or other treatment plan, will be as unique to you as you are. With a personalized approach to everything we do, we’ll work closely with you to discover the most effective solution to restoring your complete health.
How We Treat You Holistically
Nutritional Counseling +
As mentioned above, we consider your oral health along with your gut health. By offering nutritional counseling at our practice we can improve the overall health of our patients, even after they receive necessary periodontal care. Most periodontal patients have a related systemic disease with the same underlying inflammation. That’s why we treat the whole patient and consider more than just a single symptom.
Metal-Free Dental Implants +
Dental implants are traditionally made from titanium. These have the potential to lead to biocorrosion or microbiological corrosion causing a darkish grey area in the gumline and thus harming aesthetics. In other cases, patients may have an allergy to titanium leading to the body rejecting it and ultimately a failing dental implant. Some have found that titanium ions can leak from an implant over time and activate inflammatory cells causing chronic inflammation. Whatever the concern, we offer a metal-free alternative made from zirconia instead. A durable, tooth-colored material, many patients find zirconia dental implants more biocompatible and more aesthetically pleasing in the long-run.
Laser Periodontics +
Dental lasers have revolutionized dentistry and periodontics. Using a specific wavelength of light energy, our dental laser can penetrate soft tissues, only destroying the bacteria that cause disease while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. Some evidence suggests that this laser gum disease therapy technique also stimulates the cells that inspire healthy bone growth and regeneration after tissue has been lost to disease. With faster treatment times and faster healing times, it’s no wonder why so many of our patients prefer this minimally invasive alternative.
Naturally Accelerated Healing
We offer an advanced healing technique that uses growth factors already found in your body. All we need is a small sample of your blood. Spun through a centrifuge, we’re able to extract plasma-rich fibrin (PRF) and replace it in the treatment site for a fast and natural healing process. PRF can be used after numerous surgical treatments including bone grafting and dental implant placement.
